The Duo
Jonas Hackl and Sebastian Wilhelm have been playing together since 2014 — driven by a genuine love of music and the energy it creates between people.
What began at folk music gatherings and intimate pub evenings has grown into a well-established duo that knows stages of every size: from marquees packed with hundreds of guests to international events far beyond the Bavarian Forest.
The instrumentation is simple — guitar and Steirische Harmonika — and that is precisely its strength. No marathon soundchecks, no truck, no backing tracks. 100 % live. Everything that happens on stage is decided by two musicians in real time — no MIDI, no digital assistance. Just instruments and voices.
Jonas Hackl
Guitar & Stringed Instruments
Jonas Hackl, a master electrician from Mauth, has been playing guitar and various stringed instruments since 2006. Folk music is his natural habitat — though not exclusively. His playing is precise, his ear is sharp, and both are immediately apparent.
As the duo's arranger, he finds the connection between traditional folk music and familiar songs with unerring instinct: things sound exactly as you'd expect them to, but fresher than you anticipated.
Sebastian Wilhelm
Steirische Harmonika & Tuba
Sebastian Wilhelm, a PhD in computer science from Mauth, has played the Steirische Harmonika since 2004. As a tuba player in brass bands and various folk music ensembles, he understands ensemble playing and the art of knowing when to lead and when to support.
That experience feeds directly into the duo — playing alongside Jonas, he creates a sound that is full-bodied without ever being overproduced.
Award & History
In 2015, the duo received the International Folk Music Prize — awarded by „Menschen in Europa" as part of the International Folk Music Day.
The award reflects what Jonas & Sebastian have pursued from the start: folk music that lives in the moment rather than behind glass. Genuine, vital, made for real occasions with real people.
Since then, Jonas & Sebastian have performed across Germany, Austria and beyond:
